This weeks Beervana feature beer- Poterhouse Brewing Company’s Wrasslers XXXXStout - Ireland has traditionally had a long history of brewing. At the beginning of the nineteenth century there were over two hundred breweries in the country, producing a wide range of Irish beer. However, this number dropped significantly by the twentieth century due to the dominance of a few large and famous breweries. Today, there are only about 12 breweries in the country, with most producing mass-produced beer, backed by formidable marketing budgets. It was in this environment that in 1989 cousins Liam La Hart and Oliver Hughes bought a run-down building in Bray, County Wicklow, which became the Poterhouse Brewery. Wrasslers XXXX Stout is made using a recipe originally brewed by Deasy’s of West Cork in the early 1900's. This was Michael Collins’ favorite beer. In 1996, the Poterhouse brewpub was opened in the Temple Bar area of Dublin city center. In 2009 the brewery launched a range of 33cl bottle-conditioned versions of its beers. Poterhouse Brewing Company now has a chain of public houses (pubs) in Ireland and London, England.

BEER FACT: Ale has been brewed in Ireland for over 5,000 years and St. Patrick is thought to have employed his own brewer.

BEER QUOTE Nobody in their right mind would try to make beer from rice. Now would they? -Liam La Hart, founder Poterhouse Brewing Co.:"

REVIEW: The web site Beeradvocate gave Poterhouse Wrasslers XXXX Stout an "A-" rating ABV 5. 0%. This is beer with real attitude; big, powerful stout with masses of rich dark-roasted malt, coffee, dry hops and a flavor that goes on and on. A beer in a proud Irish tradition. It’s raw Irish barley that adds that extra dimension to this beer. Perfect with Fish and Chips or one of Geaghan’s Cheeseburger Clubs.: .

BEER FACT:
BEER QUOTE
–Jack Joyce, CEO Rogue Ales
: "What I like best about Rouge Ales is drinking it."
In Pakistan if you sign an affidavit stating you are the son of a Christian, you may be given permission to consume alcohol.
The web site Beeradvocate gave Rogue Dead Guy Ale an "A-" ABV 6.50%. Pours a golden amber color with a two finger creamy head and circles of lacing with each sip. The smell is sweet malt with a subtle spicy hop undertone and yeast leaves a bit of fruity esters as well. Hops are more pronounced than what hits your nose but it’s a great balance with the malts in this brew. Has just enough bite and a nice bread like aftertaste. Very well balanced indeed.
Rogue Dead Guy Ale Sláinte, Larry
Rogue Ales is an American craft brewery founded in 1988 in Ashland Oregon. The following year the company opened their second brewpub in Newport, Oregon where they are now headquartered. They operate brewpubs in Oregon, Washington, and California. Rogue exports throughout the US and internationally. John C. Maier, current Brewmaster, joined the company in 1989 after a chance encounter with CEO Jack Joyce at an airport. Maier describes Rogue ales’ practice of crafting a wide range of ales as being due to Rogue’s philosophy "that variety is the spice of life". Rogue to date has produced more than 60 different ales using a non-pasturized process with no preservatives, all natural ingredients and a proprietary yeast known as "Pacman". Rogue Ales has also expanded into distilling as well, with micro distilleries in Newport and Portland. The goal of the company is to do four things - keep making great product, keep trying to make their packaging great, keep trying to integrate Rogue in their communities, and keep creating unique thunder (in promotions).

. Our hours will be same as a Friday night with last call at 12:45. The schedule is posted, musicians are hired, green beer, corned beef, staff shirts, plastic pint glasses, decorations and wrist bands have all been ordered. This is always a very busy day but we have plenty of staff working so if we all work together and keep a smile, this could be the best St. Pat’s ever for all of us.

Atta’Boy” To everyone who stepped up and helped cover shift when folks called out. Unfortunately, we have had a lot of sickness this winter. We really appreciate it when someone comes in, stays late or picks up the load when we are short. Thank You!

We had a good meeting with Bob the Builder on Thursday and the new Draft Beer Cooler is getting closer. Building should start by the end of March. The new cooler will give us 8 new draft lines for craft beers. Andy is working on the new “Drink” table tents. They look really nice and these new tents will make it a lot easier to change beer, wine and liquor selections.

We are looking forward to this month’s Beer School on Feb 28th. This month’s school is a collaboration with Central Street Farmhouse and Pine State. The theme this month is “Home Brewing” and will feature beer making kits from CSF along with food pairings and a beer selection similar to the beer kit’s finished product

This weeks feature : Einbecker Brauherren Premium Pils The beer trade was very meaningful for the city of Einbeck in the 14th century. Each full-fledged citizen of Einbeck had the right to brew beer, and there were over 700 brewers in the city. The city council purchased the excess beer and took care of marketing the beer for Germany and abroad- from Amsterdam in the west and Tallinn in the east. By 1616 there were 742 citizen brew houses in Einbeck. In 1851 in the Einbecker Brewery the first beer was filled in bottles and the original design of the bottle has not changed. Today a private group of investors under the leadership of the Ender & Partner Vermogensverwaltung control the Einbecker Brewery

Review: The web site Beeradvocate gave Einbecker Pils a “B” rating ABV 4.90%. The apperance is a golden yellow with a crisp clear and light white heah. It has a faint hop and slightly malty and breadie smell. The taste is very nice for the style. A good lagery graininess and crispness takes center stage. There is a noticeable hop bitterness presence, although if wouldn’t be called strong. A very slight floral and spicy flavor but it’s quite light and only in the finish. Overall a good pilsner, highly drinkable and a good representation of the style.

BEER HISTORY: The oldest available receipt for the sale of Einbecker beer to the city of Celle is dated April 28, 1378

Last week’s feature beer was Baxter Brewing Company’s Pamola Extra Pale Ale. With 37 Beervanaites trying this tasty brew we had 66 of these brews sold by Saturday night. Baxter Brewing Company’s Pamola Extra Pale Ale posted solid twin marks of 4 for like and 4 for drinkability. Here are a few of my favorite comments.
“Can’t wait to go “Upta Camp” with a rack of some good, home grown cold beer.” -- Boss
“Almost a light beer. Thin on flavor.” –Pick
“I think it will help my golf game. If only it stops snowing.” –Big Rod
“ Baxter has my vote!”–SMP

This weeks feature : Allagash Brewing Company’s White. Founded in 1994 by Rob Tod, Allagash began as a one man operation in Portland, Maine. Allagash sold its first batch of beer in the summer of 1995. At that time, Belgian-style beers were difficult to find. Tod established a 15 barrel brewery and began brewing Allagash White, modeled after Belgian Wit beer. This style of beer gets its unique flavor from the use of wheat in place of barley as well as the addition of Curacao orange peel, coriander and other spices. All of the beers Allagash produces are bottle conditioned. This means that before the beer is bottled, a small amount of fresh yeast and candi sugar is added and a second fermentation occurs. This new fermentation naturally carbonates the beer and greatly enhances the traditional Belgian character. Allagash is currently distributed in over 20 ststes in the US.

Review: Allagash White had a BA rating of “A”.- ABV of 5.20% Apperance is slightly cloudy yellow orange with barley a little foam. Aroma is a mild smell of citrus, spices and yeast. The taste is a nice light body and crisp carbonation, big backbone of yeast and pale grains with coriander and slight hop notes. Lemon zest and orange peel come through more toward the finish, very slight bitterness. Overall, it’s a great tasting wheat beer without the heavy body that comes with most wheat beers.

BEER HISTORY: In the Antwerp, Belgian Café Pelgrim, opposite the De Koninck Brewery, patrons are in the habit of adding live yeast to their beer and the brewery supplies a bucketful from the fermenting room.

Get well wishes go out to Frank Wardwell who is recovering at home after breaking his ankle last week.
Happy 60th anniversary to Art and Helen Boulter on Feb. 10th. The 10th is also my birthday

Congratulations to Dawna Hensley and Shawn Cassium who were last month’s beer promotion winners. Dawna won the skies and Shawn got the $50 Hannaford Gift Card. Jay was our top sales with 118 sold. Jay will be recieving a $50. Geaghan’s Gift Card. Next month’s feature beer will be MacGeoghegan’s Irish Red Ale and the Beervana selection. The prizes will be the Landshark surf board and another $50. Gift Card along with weekly prizes.

Dawna Hensley has been asked to take over all our marketing and promotion efforts. Dawna will be responsible for Beervana, Beer School, table tents, special events and any other promotions we have.

Andy Geaghan is taking over all Front of the House hiring, supervising and scheduling. Andy is working on a new employee training program which will help us do a better job of selecting, training and retaining new employees.

As you already know, Andy worked with Tim Gallon of Black Bear Brewery to create and brew our own beer, MacGeoghegah’s Irish Red Ale. The name MacGeoghegan is the original Irish spelling of Geaghan. I also want to mention that we are working on plans to increase our number of draft beer lines from 8 to 16. We will accomplish this by building a new draft beer cooler in the cellar.

This week’s “Beervana” selection is Baxter Brewing Company’s Pamola Extra Pale Ale. Baxter Brewing Co. began operation and distribution of its beer last week. Located in Lewiston, Maine and founded by H. Luke Livingston this micro craft brewery will be the first brewery of its kind in the state to can all its beer. The reason Baxter chose to can their beer rather than use the traditional brown glass bottles is three-fold: 1- Cans are better for the environment. Baxter’s cans are made of a minimum of 50% post-consumer recycled aluminum and are infinitely recyclable. Cans require less energy to create and because they weigh less than bottles, cans use less fuel to ship. 2- Cans are better for the beer. Beer in a can has never seen UV light, which can result in spoiled or “skunked” beer. 3- Cans can go where bottles cannot because glass was frowned upon or flat out not allowed. The park, the pool, the beach, the golf course, the sailboat, camping, hiking, fishing...........

We are working on a “Home Brew” Beer School in collaboration with Central Street Farmhouse and Pine State. We’ll keep you posted.

This year’s St. Pat’s staff shirts have been designed and yes we will be ordering women’s cut and they will be for sale to customers.
