PUB NEWS Feb 13, 2011

Happy Birthday wishes to Lindsay Geaghan on the 17th and Isaac Geaghan, Dave Geaghan and Kate Moore all on the 20th.

Andy worked with Tim Gallon of Black Bear Brewery to create and brew our own beer, MacGeoghegah’s Irish Red Ale. The name MacGeoghegan is the original Irish spelling of Geaghan. Last weekend sales of MacGeoghegan’s Irish Red Ale far exceed our expectations with 3 kegs sold . Thank you to everyone who helped. I also want to mention that we are working on plans to increase our number of draft

Super Bowl sales of Boneless Wings were 272 pounds. This was 1 pound over last year’s record breaking amount.

“Atta’Boy” To everyone who stepped up and helped with our Super Bowl to go sales Whether you filled pc cups, weighed out boneless the night before, preped cheese spread, or greeted a customer, it wouldn’t work without your willingness to do that little extra. Thank You!

Feb 28th is the date for this month’s “Home Brew” Beer School in collaboration with Central Street Farmhouse and Pine State. We have all 35 slots filled but Dawna is keeping a substitute list and we may try to work in another session next month.

TOURNEY WEEK: It all starts this Friday. Let’s all look for Harold

BEERVANA NEWS
“There are only two kinds of beer-Good and Great” - John M. Geaghan 1975

Last week’s feature beer was Baxter Brewing Company’s Pamola Extra Pale Ale. With 37 Beervanaites trying this tasty brew we had 66 of these brews sold by Saturday night. Baxter Brewing Company’s Pamola Extra Pale Ale posted solid twin marks of 4 for like and 4 for drinkability. Here are a few of my favorite comments.
“Can’t wait to go “Upta Camp” with a rack of some good, home grown cold beer.” -- Boss
“Almost a light beer. Thin on flavor.” –Pick
“I think it will help my golf game. If only it stops snowing.” –Big Rod
“ Baxter has my vote!”–SMP

This weeks feature : Allagash Brewing Company’s White. Founded in 1994 by Rob Tod, Allagash began as a one man operation in Portland, Maine. Allagash sold its first batch of beer in the summer of 1995. At that time, Belgian-style beers were difficult to find. Tod established a 15 barrel brewery and began brewing Allagash White, modeled after Belgian Wit beer. This style of beer gets its unique flavor from the use of wheat in place of barley as well as the addition of Curacao orange peel, coriander and other spices. All of the beers Allagash produces are bottle conditioned. This means that before the beer is bottled, a small amount of fresh yeast and candi sugar is added and a second fermentation occurs. This new fermentation naturally carbonates the beer and greatly enhances the traditional Belgian character. Allagash is currently distributed in over 20 ststes in the US.

Review: Allagash White had a BA rating of “A”.- ABV of 5.20% Apperance is slightly cloudy yellow orange with barley a little foam. Aroma is a mild smell of citrus, spices and yeast. The taste is a nice light body and crisp carbonation, big backbone of yeast and pale grains with coriander and slight hop notes. Lemon zest and orange peel come through more toward the finish, very slight bitterness. Overall, it’s a great tasting wheat beer without the heavy body that comes with most wheat beers.

BEER HISTORY: In the Antwerp, Belgian Café Pelgrim, opposite the De Koninck Brewery, patrons are in the habit of adding live yeast to their beer and the brewery supplies a bucketful from the fermenting room.
